Marco Asensio has not begun his contract extension talks with Real Madrid yet amid Liverpool links
Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio is one of the multiple midfielders subject to a move to Liverpool. Earlier last month, Calciomercato (h/t Liverpool Echo) revealed that the Spaniard’s agent is viewing the Reds as a realistic option for the 26-year-old.
With his contract expiring in 2023 and Real Madrid’s shrewdness in the transfer market, the club could either lose him for free next summer or more probably, cash in on the player in the January transfer window.
As far as a contract extension is concerned, Carlo Ancelotti told Diario AS (h/t Liverpool Echo) that talks for a new deal with Asensio will progress only after the World Cup. With very limited minutes under his belt, the midfielder might be willing to seek regular playtime elsewhere.
Speaking of his contract extension, here is what Ancelotti said:
“We haven’t talked about contract issues because Marco is a player I trust. He has played very little, but he always shows me things and with the few minutes I give him, he does well. He will have more minutes in the future. After the World Cup we will talk about his contractual situation.”
Marco at Merseyside?
In 245 appearances for Real, Asensio has 51 goals and 24 assists. Apart from playing in the midfield, he can also play on either wing and could add a new dynamic to Liverpool. The Reds do not possess a lot of players who can play multiple positions.
Moreover, with his contract extension talks not headed anywhere presently, it could prove to be a boost for Liverpool in their pursuit of Asensio. His most recent appearance for Los Blancos came just a day ago, with the Spaniard scoring one of the three goals in Real’s win vs Elche.
Asensio also has the option of negotiating a pre-contract deal with other European clubs from January 1 in case he decides not to extend his deal at the Santiago Bernabeu. There is a possibility that negotiating an extension of the contract after the World Cup will be too late for the club.
