Liverpool goalie Alisson speaks about Darwin Nunez’s performance against West Ham United
David Moyes became the second visiting manager this week to drop to his knees on the touchline. Pep Guardiola did so earlier this week, courtesy of Mohamed Salah. It was Moyes’ turn today thanks to James Milner’s last-ditch block from close range denying Tomas Soucek the chance of a late equaliser.
However, the hero on the night for Liverpool was Alisson Becker. This season, he has saved the Reds on numerous occasions after the backline had a brain-fade moment. A top performance from the keeper today, including a Jarrod Bowen spot-kick save.
Darwin Nunez‘s goal in the first half proved to be the difference between the sides, and the Reds emerged victorious 1-0. The Uruguayan scored his first Anfield goal for Liverpool and it was refreshing to see him on the scoresheet.
Speaking to the BBC about the 23-year-old forward’s performance, here is what Alisson had to say:
“He created a lot chances to score and could have scored more, but I’m happy he score his first goal at Anfield.”
“He is a good lad, works hard every day and has good mentality. I’m very happy for him.”
Playing through the central channel with Roberto Firmino behind him, Nunez’s movement was commendable as well. Moreover, his defensive work rate has been tremendously good and that is something the gaffer would appreciate a lot.
Not having the best of starts to his Liverpool career, and a red card in just his first Anfield appearance for the Reds all came at the wrong time for him. However, it takes great mental strength to ignore all the criticism and come back to perform the way he has.
One could make the point that he still doesn’t understand the language enough to understand the criticism. But jokes apart, it looks like Nunez is starting to fit in at Liverpool. In 12 appearances across all competitions this season, he has five goals and an assist.
With this win, Liverpool find themselves in the seventh position on the points table, 11 points adrift from the top.

With a fixture against newly-promoted Nottingham Forest next, Nunez could fancy himself to perform and score a goal or two against the team, who are certainly not in the best of forms and sit 19th in the league table.
