Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp talks about Steven Gerrard after Aston Villa sacking
Following Aston Villa’s 3-0 loss to Fulham in the Premier League not very long ago, the midlands club announced the sacking of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard as their manager. Along with Gerrard, his coaches were also subject to removal from their positions.
After winning just two of their opening 12 league games at the beginning of the 2022–23 season, Gerrard was relieved of his duties by Villa on 20 October 2022. He had a tough transition from the Scottish Premiership to the English top tier.
Starting his first role in management, Gerrard was in charge of the Liverpool academy from January 2017 until April 2018 when he moved to Glasgow to manage the Rangers. Under the former Liverpool midfielder, Rangers won the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020-21 season without losing a single league match, achieving their first-ever league title in 10 years.
Speaking of his dismissal, here is what Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp told the press and showed confidence in Gerrard to overcome this setback. (via James Pearce’s Twitter):
“I’m sure he’ll come back from that. We had a little exchange this morning, nothing too deep. I can imagine the disappointment for him but we don’t need to worry about Stevie. We all get knocks. It’s about how you respond.”
What next for Gerrard?
Many ex-Liverpool players including Danny Murphy backed Gerrard to become the next manager of the club after Klopp but following his substandard record as a manager in the Premier League, one could argue that there is still time left for Stevie to take charge of the Merseysiders.
Villa’s two wins this season came against Everton and Southampton. They are yet to find a replacement for Gerrard, and for the Scouser, a good few months off from the game would probably do him a world of good.
As far as Liverpool are concerned, nobody would want to replace Klopp at any point before his contract. However, Pep Ljinders could prove to be a good replacement as the Dutchman knows the club inside-out and has had a very successful time under Klopp as the Assistant Manager.

As far as Liverpool are concerned, the club has a few tough weeks ahead with three back-to-back games in a single week including a UEFA Champions League fixture against Napoli. Despite losing 4-1 to the Italian outfit last time around, the Reds would want to hit them back harder this time around.
