Liverpool are all set to make a move for FC Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong
A report from ESPN (h/t Liverpool Echo) suggests that Liverpool are eyeing a move for out-of-favour FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. Even Chelsea and Manchester United are in the race for the Dutch star.
Frenkie, as The Mirror said last week, is not happy with his situation at Barcelona. He has been wanting a move ever since Xavi’s appointment. Earlier in the summer, United’s attempt to lure the midfielder out of Camp Nou was subject to a rejection by the player’s camp.
Moreover, Barcelona are in a tough situation on the pitch and they are not in the reckoning for the UEFA Champions League, Frenkie would want to move out of Camp Nou. A move to Liverpool though could probably give him the opportunity to play in one of Europe’s top teams.
Frenkie only has 12 appearances across all competitions this season and just one goal to show for his efforts. The highly-rated midfielder is not able to cement his place in the XI under Xavi who prefers to play Sergio Busquests, Pedri and Gavi in the middle of the park.

The former Ajax midfielder, at one point in time, was one of the most sought-after players in the European game but has found it tough to get going at the Catalan club. But at merely 25, his best days are ahead of him and he could oversee a move elsewhere to kickstart his career.
The versatile midfielder, in 142 appearances for Barcelona over nearly four seasons has 14 goals and 17 assists. The Dutch international could choose to join forces with his national team captain Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool.
With most of Liverpool’s midfield over the age of 30, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain alongside Naby Keita running out of contract in 2023, Jurgen Klopp would be wise to sign a new midfielder, and De Jong would be a fine option.

As earlier mentioned, Liverpool’s league rivals also show interest in the player and their spending power tends to be more than that of the Reds. Hence, it is important for the club to get going with any sort of negotiations with De Jong’s camp if the interest is real.
