English legend Gary Lineker pinpoints Liverpool weakness following Nottingham Forest reversal

English legend Gary Lineker took to Twitter to give his verdict on bottom-placed Nottingham Forest stunning Liverpool in the Premier League earlier today.

A Taiwo Awoniyi goal was the difference as Jurgen Klopp’s resurgent Reds were brought crashing back to earth at the City ground. The loss leaves Liverpool with much to do in the second half of the season if they are to salvage anything from the league campaign.

Klopp’s men were far from their best on the night but still crafted enough opportunities to win the game. Poor finishing coupled with some boneheaded passing in the central areas of the pitch saw them shoot themselves in the foot.

With several players out injured and a UEFA Champions League trip to Ajax Amsterdam around the corner, Klopp was forced to make some changes to the side that took to the field earlier today. Despite the quality on offer, the Merseysiders return with nothing to show for their efforts.

Lineker in particular believes the Reds lack depth at the moment. He believes the squad’s inability to bring in players of a similar calibre to that of the starting XI is proving costly.

The likes of Thiago Alcantara, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Ibrahima Konate were all missing for Liverpool on the night. While the quarter are starters when fit, one can argue that the team Klopp put out should have got the job done.

Nottingham are no Manchester City and were bottom of the table ahead of the clash. For Liverpool not to come away with a win is an embarrassing result that no excuse can cover.

While Lineker has a point about the lack of strength in depth, the real question that needs to be asked is why the players on the field are massively underperforming. The form of players like Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk has fallen off the cliff while Fabnho’s performances call for him to be dropped to the Under-21s.

In Klopp, Liverpool have possibly the best man to turn their fortunes around. However, he has to hold his senior stars accountable and not keep letting them get away with murder on a regular basis. After all, that team out there on the field today, injuries or not, was good enough to come away with all three points.
