Liverpool have been told to loan out Fabio Carvalho by former Aston Villa centre-forward Gabriel Agbonlahor.
The 20-year-old was signed from Fulham this summer after an impressive showing with the Cottagers in the Championship. When he was signed, fans expected him to play a bit-part role in games or be reserved for cup matches.
However, our midfield’s poor form and injury problems have seen Carvalho get plenty of gametime. He has scored twice in 13 games across competitions for the Reds this season and started against Nottingham Forest this weekend.
The Reds were handed a shocking 1-0 loss against the Tricky Trees at the City Ground. Carvalho and Harvey Elliott were perhaps the two youngsters trying to combine with each other the most throughout the game.
However, they could not make any tangible contributions. Carvalho had his moments but it was a rather forgetful showing from him.
After the game, Agbonlahor exclusively told talkSPORT that the Reds are better off loaning the Portuguese playmaker to help him get ready for the Premier League.
“First of all, Fabio Carvalho doesn’t look like he’s Premier League quality. He doesn’t look ready, he needs another season out on loan. He struggled, he’s not influenced the game, he looked non-existent.”
Liverpool fans may not agree with everything Agbonlahor says, and many might see his comments on Carvalho as reactionary, but he does make sense.
A team that wants to win the title or even get a top-four finish cannot afford to play a midfield as inexperienced and bland as ours. Elliott, Curtis Jones, and Carvalho are young and still lack the defensive nous necessary to become world-class central midfielders.
This is a problem that manager Jurgen Klopp and the owners have arguably brought upon themselves after not being proactive in the past transfer windows with regard to bolstering the midfield or signing the right players.
Elliott and Carvalho are doing their best and should not be blamed for our failings in the midfield area.
