Liverpool offered a ‘blank cheque’ to try and sign Darwin Nunez’s compatriot this summer

Liverpool offered a blank cheque to Federico Valverde this summer from Real Madrid

Liverpool seemingly wanted to unite international teammates Federico Valverde and Darwin Nunez in the summer transfer window. The duo is expected to represent Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar next month.

The Reds signed Nunez from SL Benfica quite early in the transfer window, giving fans hope that the club will spend more and strengthen in other positions – especially in central midfield.

If El Nacional via Football365 (h/t Liverpool Echo) is correct, then the Reds apparently went after one of the best midfielders in Europe right now.

Valverde, 24, is fast approaching the prime years of his playing career and is one of manager Carlo Ancelotti’s most trusted players in the starting XI. The Uruguay international can play as a number six, a number eight, and even as a right-winger.

This level of versatility is something that would undoubtedly entice manager Jurgen Klopp. The Reds submitted a €100million offer and a ‘blank cheque’ to Valverde in the hopes of signing him this summer.

However, no move materialised. He apparently wants to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu, which isn’t a surprise given Los Blancos

Liverpool, meanwhile, are struggling. Valverde has shown he can play well down the right flank and in central midfield – which would have made him a dream addition at right central midfield to bomb forward and also provide cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold in defence.

But it seems that he isn’t interested in a move to Anfield, or any other place for that matter. Signing a player who is a regular starter at a club like Real Madrid isn’t a very easy task.

More Liverpool News:

Our midfield has been woeful, as evident in the 2-1 loss to Leeds United at Anfield yesterday. It is unfathomable for fans that the club doesn’t at least try to sign a world-class midfielder in the near future.
