“They’re going to milk it”- Liverpool legend gives verdict on Leeds United after first Anfield loss this season

Jamie Carragher gives his verdict on Liverpool’s loss to Leeds United on Saturday

Jamie Carragher has had his say after Jesse March’s Leeds United on Saturday evening handed Liverpool their first league loss at home in 30 matches. This loss also saw Virgil van Dijk‘s unbeaten record at Anfield since his arrival at the club back in 2018 come to an end.

However, this game is not about an individual. The performance of the Reds was abysmal. The strikers had a tough day upfront with Leeds’ keeper Illan Meslier playing the best game of his life. However, the midfield was overrun by their visiting counterparts.

An early goal for Rodrigo from a misplaced Joe Gomez pass saw Leeds take the lead within 5 minutes but Mohamed Salah equalised soon. A late-late goal from Crysencio Summerville meant that Liverpool lost their second successive league game to teams in the relegation zone on the table.

Liverpool legend and pundit Jamie Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports on this defeat, said that this was indeed a serious problem for the Reds and that Leeds will milk this win at Anfield. Here is more to what he said:

“Leeds’ fans know how big a result this is. It’s so long since anyone’s won at Anfield. They’re going to milk it and rightly so. It will do wonders for them, in terms of the league table.”

“This isn’t a blip for Liverpool, this is a serious problem.”

Most of Carragher’s opinions are spot-on and this is no different. The Reds, in both their previous league games, against Nottingham and Leeds were clear favourites and the results from either game are shocking, to say the least.

Obviously, it is not every day that Liverpool lose at Anfield, especially in the league, so Leeds United are well in their rights to shove this in the Reds’ faces and brag about it for ages to come. However, it was extremely disheartening to see Liverpool play the way they did.

Merry times over on Merseyside?

More than the result, the performance of certain players is questionable. Gomez, as earlier mentioned and especially Fabinho. The Brazilian seems totally out of place this season and it would do the team and the individual a world of good if he channels his energies towards the game.

Gaffer Jurgen Klopp also gave the former Monaco man a proper earful yesterday. It is shocking to see the way Liverpool are playing this season given how six months ago, the quadruple was on for the same set of players barring a few here and there.

The present condition of the club cries out loud for the need for extra bodies in the middle of the park, and it is now an absolute necessity to find suitable backups for Fabinho and the rest of the midfielders as well.

More Liverpool News:

The Reds will come up against an in-form Napoli in the UEFA Champions League on 1st November. Even though we have qualified for the next round of the UCL, the fixture holds importance in terms of suitable draws and a 1-2 finish in the group stage.

The league situation almost looks like it is done and dusted for Liverpool. At this moment, a top-four finish looks like a ray of sunshine instead of competing for the title. However, the UCL form is something we all could cheer about.
