Real Madrid could offer Marco Asensio a new contract amid Liverpool interest
Among the many midfielders linked with Liverpool include Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio. The 26-year-old Spaniard runs out of contract with Los Blancos in 2023 (transfermarkt). Carlo Ancelloti could lose the player for free next summer if no agreement is found.
The former Mallorca man has struggled for game time this season under the Italian and earlier reports were suggestive of the fact that he wants a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu and that is when Liverpool came into the picture.
Until now, there was no news of a new deal for Asensio at the Spanish capital. However, according to Marca (h/t Liverpool Echo), Real Madrid are now ‘thinking’ about a new deal for Asensio, which could turn out to be a blow for Liverpool.
Since 2016 when he joined Real, Asensio has 51 goals and 26 assists in 248 appearances across all competitions. The extremely versatile player can play advanced roles on either flank in addition to his preferred role of an attacking midfielder.
Asensio to Liverpool
With the frequency of injuries at Liverpool, a move for a player who is still young and will certainly play his natural position in case he joins the Reds. The switch could help both the player and the club.
Asensio also has the option of negotiating a pre-contract deal with other European clubs from January 1 as per FIFA rules in case he decides not to extend his deal at the Santiago Bernabeu. But with talks of a new contract at Madrid, he would hardly want to make the switch to a struggling Liverpool side.
Real could possibly try and sell the player in the January window as Liverpool need to bring in a new body in the middle of the park. We cannot afford to leave the roster unaddressed and blind walk into another difficult season.

Even if a move for Asensio does not go through, the Reds should not shy away from bringing someone else to Anfield. The midfield seems totally disconnected this season, and an overhaul could turn out to be something the Reds needed to turn their season around.
