Liverpool legend gives his take on club’s chances of finishing in the top four this season

Jamie Carragher gives his verdict on Liverpool FC’s top four chances in the Premier League

Liverpool icon and pundit Jamie Carragher, speaking to The Mirror (h/t Liverpool Echo), has backed the Reds to finish in the top four this season ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United.

It is no secret that the Merseysiders have not had the best start to their league campaign this season. Starting off on a sorry note against Fulham and drawing the game against the West London outfit 2-2 which they should’ve easily won started the sluggish progress Jurgen Klopp’s men have since enjoyed in the Premier League.

And now, 12 games later, Liverpool see themselves in ninth on the league standings with only four wins and as many losses and draws. The season has been very strange with the Reds getting the better of Manchester City, and losing to newly promoted side Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool’s last league fixture against Leeds United also saw the Reds falter and hand the visitors all the points in a nervy fixture at Anfield which saw Jesse Marsch’s side score the winner in a 2-1 win with less than a minute to go.

CarragherbelievesArsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are hot favourites to get the UCL spots along with Manchester City. He has, however, backed the Reds to fight with Chelsea and Manchester United to seal the final spot for the European cup competition.

“I think Liverpool will get in there ahead of Chelsea and Man United and then the two north London clubs will be alongside Man City. But I think it will be a fight that goes right down to the wire and as a Liverpool supporter if you offered me fourth now I would bite your hand off.”

Can Liverpool make the top four?

Currently, Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Newcastle United are in the top four positions. Man United and Chelsea follow for fifth and sixth respectively. The gap between the Reds and the Gunners is a massive 15 points and we will need to go on a run of wins to claw our way back.

It is strange that the same set of players are doing considerably well on the continental level, but seem to struggle in the Premier League. Whatever the problem might be, it is of utmost importance for Klopp’s boys to get to the root of it and eliminate dangers in the Reds’ charge towards the top of the table.

Liverpool would be heading into their next fixture on the back of a solid 2-0 win against Napoli and would be fairly confident playing their next opposition. The players are capable of much more than what has been on show this season, and hopefully, will bounce back.

There is still a major chunk of the season left and hopefully, the Reds could make the case for themselves to finish in any of the UCL spots for next season.
