Speaking to the club’s official website, Liverpool star Caoimhin Kelleher
has revealed that he is seeking to win the Carabao Cup again with the Reds this season. The Irish shot-stopper was the hero for the Merseysiders in last season’s tournament. He played in goal in lieu of first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker and left a lasting impact on proceedings.
Kelleher also started the final at Wembley against Chelsea as Liverpool overcame the Blues on penalties. It is fair to say that the 23-year-old took his chances well and wrote his own chapter in the club’s illustrious history.
The Reds begin their defence of the trophy this season at home against Derby County on Wednesday (09 November 2022). The favourable tie should see Jurgen Klopp rotate his squad and Kelleher could once again return to the playing XI.
Despite playing Derby, the Reds cannot afford to let their guard down. Kelleher believes his side will be up for it and is keen to successfully defend the trophy this season.
“Whoever we play will be well up for it but also we want to do the same again and win it. It was a great feeling last year to get the win and hopefully we can do it again.”
His heroics at Wembley last season saw Kelleher inducted into the goalkeeper’s mural at the club’s AXA training centre. The mural acts as a wall of honour for the shot-stoppers to make an impact on the club’s history. It is fair to say that Kelleher is proud of that achievement
.The game will be Kelleher’s first for the senior team this season. Given the number of games we play across multiple fronts, it is imperative that the Reds have strength in depth to call upon when needed. Kelleher for one understands his role and is ready to step up when called upon.
“I want to try to do as well as I can in the cup games and if I’m needed elsewhere – please God, Ali doesn’t pick up an injury – or something happens that I’m ready to step in in other situations as well. I want to get as far as I can in the cup to give myself the most opportunities to play.”
With nine triumphs, Liverpool are the most successful side in the competition’s history. Last season’s victory was their first in 10 years. The players and fans will hope that they won’t have to wait long to add number 10 to the tally.
