The future of Naby Keita at Liverpool has been in doubt ever since the season started with the player in his last year of the contract. There is no real clarity from either the club or the player that they are working towards a deal.
Keita is known to be unsure of whether to extend his stay at Anfield mainly due to the lack of starting minutes and the Guinea captain has usually been used from the bench by Jurgen Klopp.
Now, according to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano via Caughtoffside, Liverpool are not planning for Keita’s departure in January.
“To sell players you always need the right proposals; at the moment, there are no official negotiations or bids yet so it’s still quiet. I’m told that, despite speculation, they are not planning for Naby Keita to leave in January, as things stand.”
It was the make-or-break season for Keita, who has failed to truly stack a claim in the dominant Liverpool starting eleven mainly due to recurring injury issues and loss of form at key stages.
Not the ideal manner that both the player and the club would have envisaged when the transfer between RB Leipzig and Liverpool in 2017 for £52.75m.
With Keita failing to recover fully from his injury suffered at the beginning of the season, it seems like the club is willing to let the player go on a free next summer with no concrete talks of a contract extension.
The club is expected to go heavy in the summer transfer window and revamp their ageing midfield issue and Keita could be one of the casualties.
On the other hand, Keita could start speaking to clubs of other leagues come January and maybe a move would suit the interest of all parties involved.
