“One of the biggest mistakes of my life”- Klopp admits regret on missing out on rival PL superstar

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp regrets not signing current Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min

Speaking to South Korean network KBS (h/t The Daily Star), Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he regrets not signing Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min.

The German boss was aware of the South Korean star’s potential while in charge of Borussia Dortmund. Son arrived on German shores in 2008 and developed into a key player for Hamburger SV and then Bayer Leverkusen.

Klopp did an excellent job at the Westfalenstadion as Dortmund did their best to change powerhouses Bayern Munich for domestic and continental supremacy. During his seven years at Dortmund, many players would come and go but Son wasn’t one of them.

Klopp was aware of the attacker’s traits and was keen to land him in the summer of 2013. However, the player had other ideas and chose to move to Leverkusen instead. Both men would eventually end up in the Premier League but never got the opportunity to work with one another

Despite it being nine years, Klopp still has not forgotten missing out on the attacker. It speaks volumes about his opinion of missing out on Son that Klopp calls him one of the biggest mistakes of his career.

“One of the big mistakes in my life was that I didn’t sign him.”

Klopp at Liverpool has come up against Son several times, including in the 2019 UEFA Champions League final. The German has little doubt that Son is anything but a world-class player.

“Outstanding player. World-class player and one of the best strikers in the world.”

Son has done quite well for himself, emerging as one of the best players in the Premier League with Tottenham. One could argue that working under Klopp could have taken him to even greater heights

At 30, Son is not getting young anymore and has been touted to leave

Tottenham next year. Should it materialise, it remains to be seen if he will finally get the chance to play under the German, this time at Anfield.
