Liverpool duo included in England’s 26-man World Cup squad for Qatar

Liverpool stars Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2022 Qatar World Cup

England boss Gareth Southgate today announced the national team’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar later this month and includes two Liverpool stars Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool skipper Hendo’s inclusion in the squad was a mere formality as he is a regular in the national team and is one of the most senior members of the squad to boot. The former Sunderland midfielder has captained the Three Lions on multiple occasions too and will hope to bring glory to his nation this time.

Hendo last featured for The Three Lions back in a 3-3 draw against Germany in the UEFA Nations League back in September. All in all, he has made 69 appearances for England across various competitions and friendlies and has two goals and nine assists for his country.

Trent named in England squad alongside Hendo

Speaking of the other Liverpool representative, Trent’s selection and involvement in the squad was under major threat ahead of the announcement. The 24-year-old Scouser was not in the best of forms this season and his main competitor Reece James was in sublime touch.

Multiple questions over Trent’s defensive stability might have cornered the England boss to think more than once about including Liverpool’s #66 in his squad. However, in the last few games, he has been much solid in the backline and has warranted himself a case to feature in this year’s World Cup.

Trent made his debut for The Three Lions back in June 2018 and was on the bench in England’s semi-final loss to Belgium in the last World Cup. In total, he has featured 17

times for Southgate’s team and has a goal and four assists to his name.

The gaffer has announced a defensively strong side, much like himself, and would hope that Trent’s inclusion in the team adds that extra creative spark in terms of chance creation against low-block sides, especially like Iran.
