Liverpool star praised for “De Bruyne-esque” pass in 3-1 win vs Southampton

Pat Nevin compares Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliot with Kevin De Bruyne

Former Everton winger Pat Nevin has compared Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott with Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.

This comparison came after the 19-year-old provided a fantastic assist to striker Darwin Nunez to give his side the lead against Southampton on Saturday (12 November).

Jurgen Klopp’s side won the game 3-1, with Roberto Firmino opening the scoring and Nunez scoring a brace. Che Adams scored the only goal for his team against the Reds at Anfield.

Elliott started the game in the middle of the park along with Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho. The 19-year-old received the ball from Firmino inside the box and kept his cool to provide a chip cross to Nunez who beautifully volleyed it into the net.

It was the 19-year-old’s first assist of the season in all competitions and former Everton winger Nevin, while speaking on BBC Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo), compared that cross with City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.

“Fantastic for Nunez, getting into the right position and not panicking when it came to him. Let’s be fair, it’s about the ball into him. Elliott gets his head up, he’s only got about half a yard to look at it. That’s De Bruyne-esque.”

“If Kevin De Bruyne does that, you think wow, how many players can do that at that level? Elliott has definitely got that.”

There is no doubt that only a few players would be able to pull off that assist. To that at just 19 shows what a gem of a player Elliott is. You can watch the assist here:

While Elliott and Nunez will be getting the praise, goalkeeper Allison Becker too deserves all the hype. The 30-year-old was fantastic in between the posts and denied the Saints some good goal-scoring opportunities to help his side claim all three points.
