Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan has ruled out the possibility of ever joining Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool
Manchester City captain and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, while speaking to German magazine Kicker (h/t Liverpool Echo) has ruled out any possibility of joining his former Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
Gundogan, who played under Klopp for four seasons at Borussia Dortmund only has respect and admiration for his fellow compatriot but believes that he does not see any potential move to Liverpool happening, considering his contract expires next summer (Transfermarkt).
“I think I can rule out that happening.
Everyone knows how much I like and appreciate Kloppo.
But I’ve been at City for a few years now. And now as City captain to rival Liverpool? No, I can not imagine [it].”
Gundogan left the Bundesliga for the Premier League around the same time as Klopp but by joining Pep Guardiola as his first signing with Manchester City in 2016.
Over the years, he has become a trusted player that the Spaniard often goes to when the team is struggling and has shown his capabilities of playing in different positions as required by the team.
He was deservedly made the captain of the team, once Fernandinho left the club this summer and although there have no concrete details on the player’s contract extension, it would be foolish to think that unless the player wants a new challenge, our rivals would be more than happy to retain his services.
In any manner, it would be a shock if Gundogan changes allegiances and joins Klopp considering Liverpool and Manchester City have been rivals for the past seasons and have had numerous engaging encounters.
If the player decides to leave the league, he would have everything there is to win in England with four Premier League titles, the FA Cup and four League Cups and was instrumental in last season’s final game against Aston Villa, which clinched the league title away from us.
Ideally, the memory is still fresh in our minds to be able to even fathom that the German could join Liverpool as it would be too much to take for the fans and the player despite the ilk of the player.
