Jurgen Klopp confirms Liverpool are engaged in contract negotiations with Roberto Firmino

With just months left before he enters free agency, Liverpool are now making their move. Any agreement is far from done but conversations are certainly taking place behind the scenes.

At 31, Firmino is not getting any younger and has lost a bit of his sharpness. However, he remains a key player for the Reds and an excellent option usable during rotation. His intelligence and experience are key traits that Liverpool can use over the course of a season.

The Brazilian joined the Merseysiders mere months before Klopp took over from Brendan Rodgers. He has since developed into a key cog for the side and one of the German’s key pieces at Anfield.

Firmino has made 348 appearances

for Liverpool across all competitions, scoring 107 goals and assisting 78 more. He is also the highest-scoring Brazilian in the Premier League, a testament to his ability as a footballer.

The arrivals of Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez will certainly impact Firmino’s game time at Anfield. He still has a role to play and it is in Liverpool’s best interests to keep him on beyond the summer of 2023.

Firmino was handed a cruel blow earlier this month when Tite did not select him in the Brazil squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. This will, however, give the player some much-needed rest while also handing Liverpool a chance to push contract negotiations further along.
