21-year-old Liverpool midfield star extends Anfield contract

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones signs a long-term deal with the club.

Academy graduate and current first-team midfielder Curtis Jones has put pen to paper and has now a new contract from Liverpool (Twitter). The 21-year-old midfielder was out for a prolonged period this summer, but the gaffer believes his skills warrant him a new contract and hence, has put his plan into action.

His contract was set to expire in 2025 but with the unpredictable nature of Liverpool’s midfield when it comes to injuries, it is a rather safe move to secure a player’s future with the club for a prolonged period of time.

The Scouser has been with the Reds since the age of six and being a homegrown talent obviously helps in keeping the squad count in that perspective at check. Jones has captained the age-group squads and has also captained the first team on one occasion in the FA Cup against Shrewsbury Town, back in 2020.

In 81 appearances for the Reds across all competitions, Jones has eight goals and ten assists

. The most iconic of those goals would be his top-corner strike against Everton in the FA Cup a couple of seasons ago.

The central midfielder scored the Reds’ third goal in a 3-3 draw to Brentford last season but has not been on the scoresheet since. Not exactly a goal-scoring midfielder, Curtis is the kind of player who tends to retain the ball and link up play in the midfield.

Curtis for the Reds

Technically very sound for his age, alongside Harvey Elliott, who also signed a long-term deal recently and Fabio Carvalho, the trio promise to be a wonderful coming-of-age midfield trio for the Reds.

Even though a few of Jones’ recent performances have been question-worthy, hopefully with time, he cements his spot in the playing XI and starts delivering those performances Steven Gerrard expected him to, during his mentorship of Jones in the Reds’ academy.

Given the current set of midfielders is not getting younger by the day, it gives youngsters like Curtis the chance to make the most of the opportunities coming his way and try to get a starting spot more often than not.

With a couple of midfielders like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita seeing their contracts out next summer, and their exit the most likely, Curtis could see a door open for a regular chance in the starting XI, and hopefully, he takes them well.
