Portugal U-21 manager Rui Jorge expresses disappointment at Liverpool star Fabio Carvalho’s decision
Liverpool summer signing Fabio Carvalho surprised everyone when he announced that he would not be representing Portugal at the national level anymore and Portugal U-21 manager Rui Jorge is certainly not happy with it.
While speaking about the decision taken by Carvalho (h/t Liverpool Echo), Jorge admits that it was a big disappointment when he heard the news.
“I got disappointed by the way it went. The fact that Fabio sent me a message, on Saturday night, saying that he didn’t want to continue in the under-21s. That he had been thinking and didn’t want to continue in the under-21s, because it no longer brought him any benefit.”
Many presume the reason behind the forward’s decision to not continue with Portugal was mainly down to the fact that he was not selected for the official Portugal squad for the FIFA World Cup.
It is to be noted that a player of dual nationality has the option of choosing between any of the two nations until he has made a senior appearance for the team.
Carvalho only represented Portugal at the youth levels and hence was eligible to switch nationalities, paving the way for England to take into consideration another exciting young talent.
Despite his age, Liverpool saw the potential in him with his sublime performances for Fulham in the Championship last season and made sure to complete the deal before he becomes a household name and attracts more suitors.
In his appearances so far, Carvalho has not at all looked out of place in a team filled with world-class players and would only improve further with time. The 20-year-old seems mature enough to play at the very top level and has held his own against elite opposition in the past several months.

His decision to switch nationalities also shows maturity and determination at such a young age and has the potential to become a top-class talent under Jurgen Klopp. Hopefully, the call pays off and keeps taking big strides towards becoming a full international.
