Romano says 29-year-old Liverpool star is expected to leave as free agent in 2023

Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will leave next summer as per Fabrizio Romano

Renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claims via Twitter that Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain shall not stay at the club beyond the summer of 2023, when his contract expires, and shall in the most likely of situations, depart on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old joined Liverpool from Arsenal in 2017 on deadline day for a fee of £35m. Co-incidentally, his last game for Arsenal was against the Reds, wherein the North-London club lost by a 4-0 margin.

Making his debut for Jurgen Klopp’s men in the Carabao Cup, Ox accumulated 17 goals and 15 assists across all competitions for the Reds in 137 appearances. One could argue that he did not reach his potential which was blooming during his spell at Arsenal under Arsene Wenger.

The Ox, as he is fondly called in the dressing room, has struggled a lot with injury issues during his time at Merseyside. That is something which grew to become a barricade for him in his attempt to cement his place in the starting XI and gather more minutes.

Tried and tested in almost all positions in the midfield and the forward line, Ox has got most of his goal contributions from his preferred position of central midfield. His first 90 minutes this season came against Derby County in the EFL Cup earlier this season, wherein he scored his penalty to help the Reds gain an advantage in the shootout.

Injury-laid Ox for the Reds

A hamstring injury saw him sidelined for the most part of the season, and that could sum his Liverpool career up as well. Sidelined more often than not, and not being consistent in his performances when available might be something that might have made the Reds think beyond the former Southampton man.

Although a fan-favourite, his own tough time with injury never saw that convert into performances on the pitch. All in all, he has missed 90 games due to injury issues, which is concerning, to say the least.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has one final opportunity to redeem himself, though. If he somehow keeps fit in the second half of this season and contributes well whenever given the opportunity, the fans will perhaps be open to giving him a second chance.

He was, after all, a brilliant addition to Liverpool’s team in the first couple of seasons. He has a brilliant shot on him and is versatile enough to play multiple positions. It’s just that we haven’t been able to see his strengths due to his injury troubles.
