Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu shocked to learn Liverpool star Thiago Alcantara is not in Spain squad

Speaking in an interview with AS (h/t Liverpool Echo), Arsenal and Japan defender Takehiro Tomiyasu was shocked when he got to know that Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara was not picked in the Spain squad for the Qatar World Cup.

Tomiyasu who is a regular for Arsenal in the Premier League and Japan in the national team was speaking ahead of his side’s game against Germany and did not know that Thiago was not a part of the Spain squad.

Japan and Spain find themselves in the same squad along with Costa Rica and Germany. Despite this, Tomiyasu was stunned by the absence of the Liverpool star and said that he did not know about it.

Tomiyasu was not the only one stunned by the absence of Thiago. Most football watchers could not believe the fact that Luis Enrique chose to omit the midfield maestro from his final squad.

There is no doubt that Spain have an extremely stacked midfield with a lot of talented players but there are not many players in the world who are better than Thiago when fit and he deserves to be in Qatar.

The 46-cap midfielder last represented Spain in the semi-final of the 2020 UEFA European Championship last year when he featured as a substitute in a semi-final defeat.

Tomiyasu was genuinely stunned when he got to know that Thiago was not there with Spain and responded like this:

“He’s not coming? Sorry, I didn’t know that”

Spain’s loss is Liverpool’s gain though. Thiago is extremely injury-prone and his staying in England and training with the Reds will be a better option for him to stay fit than playing in the national team.

Thiago will no doubt have been expecting to go to the World Cup with Spain and contribute to his nation but he will have to put his head down, get beyond the disappointment and look at the time ahead with Liverpool.
