Liverpool have appointed Jonathan Power as the club’s new doctor after Jim Moxon departure

According to journalist Paul Joyce of The Times (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have appointed Jonathan Power as their new club doctor after Dr Jim Moxon left the club in the summer.

Power has previously worked with West Brom and has also held the position of team performance medical doctor for the FA for the England men’s national team for close to ten years.

He was also the team physician with the youth teams that won the Under-17s World Cup and U19s European Championship side. He will be joining the Liverpool team when they leave for their pre-season tour in Dubai before officially taking over once the Premier League resumes.

Power also had recent Premier League being Brentford’s matchday doctor in 2019 and 2021, hence it would not be a difficulty for the experienced doctor to get used to the intensity and demands of the league.

The appointment was made after an extensive search which involved the participation of head coach Jurgen Klopp and departing sporting director Julian Ward. The latter, meanwhile, is expected to leave at the end of the season as Liverpool’s backroom continues to change shape in recent months.

The appointment comes at a crucial time as our season has suffered tremendously due to recurring injuries to many key players, which has led to us dropping out of the title race and now fighting for a top-four qualification.

Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz, Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain are some of the names that have faced the majority of the time on the sidelines during the first half of the season.

It is rather concerning how the players are not able to regain fitness from recurring injuries and there needs to be a proper look into if there are medical factors which are preventing their progress.

For professional football players, the importance of maintaining their health in order to prevent injuries is bigger than anything and holds the impact of making or breaking a season.
