Fabio Carvalho admits Liverpool have not been pressing as well as last season after Olympique Lyon loss
Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho has admitted the team have not been pressing as well as they did last season after the loss to Olympique Lyon.
The Reds took on the Ligue 1 outfit on Sunday (11 December) in a friendly at Al-Maktoum Stadium in Dubai. At the end of the 90 minutes, the Anfield side had lost 3-1 to the French side.
Speaking after the defeat to the club’s official website (h/t Metro), Carvalho revealed the team were looking at videos from last season. The 20-year-old feels Liverpool need to bring back the intensity they showed in the 2021/22 campaign.
“We have been looking at videos from last season and obviously it has helped. We want to get back to pressing how the team pressed last year, which was very useful in games and we created a lot of chances from it.
“We haven’t quite been at the level pressing-wise this year and it’s something we’ve been working on and will keep working on. Hopefully we’ll be back to our best.”
The Portugal U21 international started the game and opened the scoring for the Reds in the first minute. However, former Arsenal star Alexander Lacazette equalised for Lyon just before half-time.
At the break, Jurgen Klopp decided to substitute the whole team. The French side then went on to take the lead before Lacazette got his brace.
In the previous campaign, Klopp guided the team to three finals and took the Premier League title race to the last day. But unfortunately, we lost the Champions League final and missed out to Manchester City in the English top flight.
However, this season, Liverpool have failed to keep pace. We are currently 15 points behind table-toppers Arsenal in the league table. The Reds have not been at their best.
Carvalho signed for us in the recent transfer window from Fulham. The Portuguese has played in various positions for the Anfield side in the current campaign.
