Liverpool join Manchester United and Newcastle United in race for Leicester City playmaker James Maddison

Leicester City star James Maddison has become a ‘top target’ for Liverpool to bolster their midfield, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t Mirror).

The Red have joined the race for the England international’s signature alongside Manchester United and Newcastle United. The 26-year-old is high on the list of priorities for both the Red Devils and the Magpies.

Under Brendan Rodgers, the Foxes were going on an upward trajectory in the last two seasons. However, the East Midlands outfit have been struggling to keep up the pace in the Premier League in the current campaign.

Leicester are currently 13th in the league table. The Foxes have not looked their best for most of the season. However, Maddison has still performed well for the club. In 14 appearances in all competitions, the 26-year-old has scored seven goals and provided four assists.

United lost a number of midfielders like Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic in the recent transfer window. The Red Devils subsequently signed Christian Eriksen and Casemiro as reinforcements. The two, alongside Bruno Fernandes, have been Erik ten Hag’s first choice.

On the other hand, Newcastle are having a brilliant campaign under Eddie Howe. They are third in the English top flight, fighting for a top-four spot.

As for Liverpool, we have been below par this season. The Red are currently 15 points behind table-toppers Arsenal in the PL. Injuries in the middle of the park have not made life any easier.

The likes of Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, amongst others, have all been sidelined at some point in the 2022/23 campaign. Loan signing Arthur Melo has also not featured much.

Thus, the Anfield side evidently need to bolster their engine room. However, Maddison has mostly played in the number 10 position throughout his career. Thus, it remains to be seen whether Jurgen Kopp opts to pursue the 26-year-old’s signature.
