SL Benfica and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez reaches pre-contract agreement with Liverpool

Liverpool have reached a pre-contract agreement with SL Benfica and Argentina star Enzo Fernandez, according to Portuguese outlet Record and Spanish publication Diario AS on Twitter (h/t Mirror).

The Reds are looking to sign a central midfielder. In the recent transfer window, the Merseyside outfit missed out on getting a hold of Aurelien Tchouameni, who joined Real Madrid.

Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham is another name the Anfield side are pursuing. However, the England international has a host of top clubs eyeing his signature.

Fernandez joined Benfica in the summer of 2022 from Argentine outfit River Plate. The 21-year-old’s current contract includes a mammoth £106 million release clause.

The midfielder has caught a lot of people’s eyes in his short time in European football. Roger Schmidt’s team are unbeaten in all competitions up until now in the current campaign.

Fernandez has been a pivotal member of the Primeira Liga outfit’s success this season. He has made 24 appearances for the Eagles in all competitions, mostly in the number eight position, scoring three goals and providing five assists.

The 21-year-old has also been impressive in Qatar with Argentina. La Albiceleste have made it to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup and the youngster has been a key part of Lionel Scaloni’s team.

As for Liverpool, our current midfield is ageing. The likes of Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson and James Milner are all in their 30s. Other options like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have been injury prone during their time with the Red.

Thus, the Anfield side evidently need to add fresh blood in the middle of the park. Fernandez is a young prospect who is showcasing his skills at the highest level. But it remains to be seen whether we can pull off a deal for the youngster in the coming transfer windows.
