Divock Origi is a Liverpool cult hero. Goals in the UEFA Champions League including the final, in the Merseyside Derby, a late winner against Wolverhampton last season, you name it. There is hardly any player in the Reds’ history who has come in half as clutch as the 27-year-old Belgian.
His eight-year association with the Merseysiders came to an end over the summer as the striker moved on to seven-time European champions AC Milan. There is nothing but respect from Liverpool fans for the Lille striker, and so is the case for the players as well.
The Reds face Stefano Pioli’s side in the Dubai Super Cup on Friday, 16th December in what is a mid-season club friendly. Origi will reunite with his mates from Merseyside in the Middle East when the two European juggernauts lock horns at the Al-Maktoum Stadium.
Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips talked about the potential reunion with Origi, and his bond with the player on the club’s official website and here is what he said:
“I hope he is there. I am looking forward to seeing him and it’ll be nice because I got on well with Div.”
As per Nat, the pair rather got on well and shared a few interesting moments on the pitch as well; notably, in one particular UCL match wherein Nat was rock solid at the back for the Reds, with Origi scoring for the Reds on the other end of the pitch. The opponents? A certain seven-time UCL-winning club from Italy.
Obviously, the Reds would hope to get the better of Origi and his teammates in the game as it will be their final warmup match away from England before they head back and train full-time as the competitive season begins soon for the Reds.
As far as Phillips is concerned, the 25-year-old has not played enough games since his spell in the 2020/21 season wherein most defenders for Liverpool stood out with injury issues. He has played only three games overall this season and would hope to gather game time once the season restarts.
The Reds would hope for a near-full-strength side at least for Aston Villa on Boxing Day if not Manchester City on 22nd December. However, this half of the season is extremely crucial for the Reds, and to secure their transfer targets, they would need to get a top-four finish for a UCL spot for sure.
