Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard expects the Reds to finish the season well
After enduring what could be termed a sluggish start to the league campaign, Liverpool looked somewhat back on track towards the final few games of the season before the international break for the World Cup.
The interlude would have allowed most Liverpool squad members to enjoy a much-needed break from football, get to introspect where they went wrong and come back with a much stronger mindset in the next half of the campaign.
Seven Liverpool representatives in the World Cup, one of whom faced a group-stage elimination will not be in the best of mindsets and Darwin Nunez would hope to put his unsuccessful World Cup campaign behind him and turn up for Liverpool.
The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Alisson will be proud of their performances in the tournament taking their countries to the knockouts, and Konate especially to the finals, which will take place on Sunday, 19th December.
Speaking to the club’s official website, former Liverpool captain and club legend Steven Gerrard spoke about his confidence in the side and added that he expects them to finish the campaign well. Here is what he added:
“I expect a really strong six months and finish to the season because important players have had the chance to rest and recover and the players [who have been] in the World Cup should come back full of confidence, in a good place, physically ready.”
“I expect a really strong, exciting finish to the season for the Reds.”
For the current lot of players, including many of whom would have looked at Gerrard as a role model, such words of assurance will boost the morale and confidence of the squad as a whole. Moreover, the fact that most players would have had a good break in between will obviously contribute too.
Better second spell for the Reds
Overall, after six wins, four losses and four draws in the league, going into the break, Liverpool stood in the sixth position on the league charts, 15 points adrift from the top. Compared to the first few weeks of the campaign, the spell towards the beginning of the international break was much more successful for the Reds.
Hopefully, Stevie is right in his prediction and the Reds get to more than just a top-four finish at the end of the current campaign. Presently in a training camp in Dubai, the Reds will fly back to Merseyside post their last friendly against AC Milan on Friday.
