“He was always a threat” – Former English forward gives his verdict on summer signing

Peter Crouch believes Darwin Nunez has all the potential to succeed for Liverpool

Former Liverpool forward Peter Crouch, while speaking to Liverpool Echo, has backed summer signing Darwin Nunez to be a success at the club after a rough start to his career at Anfield.

Crouch, who made 135 appearances for the club, admits that there is a proper player in there after watching a lot of Portuguese football during Nunez’s time at SL Benfica.

“Listen, I like Nunez as a forward. I watched an awful lot of him in Portugal covering the Champions League games and he was always a threat.

“So I thought he would be a good signing at the time. He looks a little bit like he’s still finding his feet. I know the goals have been coming, but I think it will be a long-term plan with him.”

Crouch is right in the fact that although there was a huge fee spent on the player, the investment was made keeping in mind the future of the club and not just the present.

Darwin, at 23 years of age, has all the qualities needed to succeed at the very top. It is sometimes hard to remember the jump that the player has made in playing in the second tier of Spanish football.

The development graph of Nunez is different from that of a contemporary player in the Premier League who usually make the rise up by learning their trade in the hugely growing leagues of Europe.

Understandably it would have taken any player to get used to the surroundings and intensity of the league, which to Nunez’s credit, he has done incredibly well after a horror start to his career which saw him get a red card on his Anfield debut.

The manner in which the player has risen from ridicule and criticism shows his mental strength and belief, which is an essential element found in all top players.

Even his numbers are good considering he has made many of his appearances off the bench. In a total of 18 appearances made so far, scoring nine times in the process.

After a disappointing campaign with Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup 2022, Nunez would have his eyes set on staking a claim in the second half of the season set to resume soon.

He is already showing glimpses of good form after scoring twice in Liverpool’s 4-1 win over AC Milan in the friendly on Friday night. He will look to continue the form when the official games begin, with Liverpool facing Manchester City in the EFL Cup on the 23rd December.
