Emotions run high in football games. It was on evidence earlier today when Liverpool beat AC Milan 4-1 in the Mid-Season Dubai Super Cup Friendly series. James Milner led the side out in the absence of first-choice captain Jordan Henderson, and Milly more often than not is an extremely vocal player.
Starting at right back, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago and Stefan Bajcetic in midfield, Milner, on one occasion got the better of the Ox’s ears as the former Southampton man loaded up for a shot and missed by a sizeable margin.
Perhaps, if he would have laid it off for one of his teammates, the chance would have resulted in a Liverpool goal. A few minutes later though, Alexis Saelemakers scored for Milan, but Darwin Nunez’s brilliance meant that the Reds had it written in their destiny for a win on the night.
Even in a friendly game, a natural leader like Milner rightly demands the best from his teammates and believed that Ox could have done better than what he did at the moment. Nevertheless, it is good to see the competitiveness one of the seniormost members of the squad shows, even if it is a friendly game.
Hopefully, his professionalism serves as an example for youngsters to learn from and incorporate into their own games. There would be plenty of Academy Stars around the first-team members and they would hope to learn as much as they can from their club heroes.
Liverpool spring back into action on 22nd December against Manchester City in the EFL Cup and that will mark the restart of their league campaign. One would expect Milner to start in midfield in that game, with Calvin Ramsay chipping in at right-back.
At last, the Reds would hope to finish their league campaign contrary to the way it started off and hopefully, get more than just a top-four finish this season.
