PSV Eindhoven preparing for inevitable Cody Gakpo exit amid Liverpool being keen
Cody Gakpo is one of the hottest prospects in world football with his exploits for both club and country and is being linked with a move away from his current club PSV Eindhoven, with Liverpool being one of the interested parties.
Gakpo has been in sensational form for PSV this season and has contributed to impressive 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 appearances for the Dutch outfit.
The forward continued his good form at the club level during his stint with the national team at the FIFA World Cup and ended the tournament with three goals to his name.
Many predicted Gakpo to make a big money move in the summer but according to PSV manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy, while speaking to Voetbal International (h/t the Mirror), the forward could leave the club as soon as in January.
“If I have the choice, I prefer [Gakpo to leave in] the summer, but it can also be now. You just know there comes a time when you can’t say no.”
It is a big admission from the PSV manager that it is not in their power anymore to keep hold of the player, who has done more than enough to deserve a move to one of the top teams in Europe’s top five leagues.
As a striker himself who made his name in the Netherlands before moving to England, Nistelrooy knows all about the importance of a transfer to a player’s career and the trajectory that it can the player take.
Hence, as mentioned above, PSV would not be standing in the player’s way of a move as long as their fee demand, which has increased due to World Cup exploits, is met.
Rivals Manchester United are the other strong contenders to sign Gakpo, with the player coming close to a move to Old Trafford in the summer window and ultimately the deal did not go through.
One factor which works in our rivals’ favour is that Erik ten Hag and Gakpo share the same agency and hence there is already a better-established relationship between the two.

Still, the charm and value of playing for Liverpool are second to none and Gakpo would be aware of it. Now with PSV conceding on their stance, it is on us to agree to a fee with the club and personal terms with the player as soon as we can.
It feels like a move which would be concluded in the January transfer window and hence if Jurgen Klopp and the recruitment team are interested in the player, there is not much time to be wasted.
