Transfer News: Liverpool are interested in AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer

According to Tuttomercatoweb via Sport Witness (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are interested in bringing in AC Milan defensive midfielder Ismael Bennacer to Anfield.

The midfielder sees his current contract expire in 2024 (transfermarkt), although the Italian side wants to tie him down to a new contract. The 25-year-old also prefers to stay with the Rossoneri.

However, even if the club cannot agree to a new deal with the midfielder, they do not plan to allow him to leave in January. The Reds are monitoring the situation around his contract carefully.

Jurgen Klopp needs to reinforce his midfield if he wants to have a successful second half to the season. The Reds have had a very static midfield and this has cost us some very precious points so far.

Fabinho has had a disappointing season so far. The Brazilian has not been on the top of his game and also does not have any direct competition in the team, something that has not been rectified since his move to Merseyside in 2018.

Bennacer has been crucial for the Milan-based club this season, featuring in all their 21 games so far in all competitions. The Algerian international has shown his box-to-box ball-carrying ability multiple times and would make a very fine addition to the squad.

However, with the midfielder preferring to stay at his current club, it will likely not be easy for Klopp and co to convince him to make the move. Nevertheless, the Reds should not give up and continue to monitor his situation.

Should he not sign a new deal, Milan will know that January would be the best time to cash in on their midfielder. It remains to be seen if the Reds will make an offer for the 25-year-old next month.
