Transfer News: Steve Nicol believes Liverpool should sign Memphis Depay

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol believes Liverpool should sign Barcelona and The Netherlands forward Memphis Depay to help solve the injury issue upfront.

While midfield is in the most need of reinforcements, the forward line too could do with some help. Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz are expected to be out for months, leaving a handful of attackers to choose from.

Now, Nicol while speaking to ESPN (h/t Metro), believes that Depay could help solve this problem and Jurgen Klopp should consider making a move for the Dutchman.

“I mean, why not? The guy has got ability. Barcelona, considering the situation they are in financially, maybe it could work. If Liverpool had Depay on the bench to come on, then that wouldn’t be a bad thing.”

“Considering how difficult these things always seem to work out, it probably seems unlikely. But as far as being a good idea, then absolutely.”

Depay sees his contract at Spotify Camp Nou expire at the end of the season and the former Olympique Lyon forward will be available for a cut-fee price next month. The Spanish club is also open to allowing the player to leave.

Mohammed Salah and Darwin Nunez have been inconsistent so far and with Jota and Diaz out, it would not be a bad idea to have a player like Depay on the squad. Despite not playing much this season, the forward is still a threat.

He featured in five games for his country at the World Cup, scoring one goal in the process and helping them reach the quarter-finals. This was despite suffering from fitness problems throughout the competition.

Also Roberto Firmino sees his contract expire next summer and his future is still undecided. While Depay is likely to be a short-term solution, he would still be cheaper than our other targets and Klopp could keep him till he fixes his midfield.

With the Dutchman more than likely to leave Barcelona this winter, it remains to be seen if the Reds make an approach for him. Still a very capable forward, he could make a fine addition to the squad for the second half of the season.
