John Barnes urges Liverpool to sign Enzo Fernandez

SL Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez was extremely important in Argentina’s World Cup-winning campaign in Qatar earlier this month. The 21-year-old has been on Liverpool’s radar prior to the commencement of the tournament. His successful time in the Middle East will in all likelihood see his price-tag soar.

Among the big names linked with a move to Liverpool, Fernandez stands out alongside Borussia Dortmund’s English international Jude Bellingham. With plenty of Reds including James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all running out of contract next summer, it is extremely important for the Reds to get on board long-term replacements for the trio.

“He’s a very aggressive, hard working midfield player which suits Liverpool but may not suit Man City or Arsenal. Enzo fits the profile of a player Liverpool would want. That’s a player I feel could seamlessly fit into what Liverpool want.”

Fernandez has shown with his performances in the World Cup, and even earlier this season for Benfica that he is a player who can put in the hard yards and scale the lengths of the pitch to put his team into an ideal position. Liverpool have had a history of having players of that profile under Klopp, for example, Gini Wijnaldum and maybe even Emre Can.

Enzo to the Reds?

It is easy to understand what Barnes meant when he said Enzo does not necessarily meet the demands of a team like Arsenal or Manchester City. These are teams that thrive on having the ball for most periods of the game, and technical players suit these clubs more than they would fit in at Liverpool.

Most players on the Merseysiders’ radar fit this description and hopefully, next summer marks the beginning of a new era in Liverpool’s midfield and we continue to challenge on all possible fronts for all six trophies.

The prospect of having Bellingham and Fernandez partnering with Thiago Alcantara in our midfield is a mouth-watering one. Hopefully, it will come to pass.
