Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports after the game against Manchester City as quoted by the Express, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was visibly displeased with his side’s defence for the goals they conceded last night.
Liverpool conceded three goals last night which eventually proved one too many as they lost 2-3 to Pep Guardiola’s side. It means that the Reds have made an early exit from the Carabao Cup this time.
Man City scored three goals, with Erling Haaland, Riyad Mahrez and Nathan Ake all getting on the score sheet. Credit where credit is due and the second goal from Mahrez was a really good one that the Reds could not have done anything about.
However, questions need to be asked of Liverpool’s defence in both the first and third goals that they conceded. The Reds must have cut out the cross that came in from the left for Haaland in the first place. Once it reached the Norwegian, there was only one outcome.
If that goal was bad, how Liverpool defended (or failed to defend) the third goal that Man City scored was even more shocking. It just seemed like the entire backline turned off for a moment in that incident.
The Reds left Ake completely unmarked for the goal that he scored. Nat Phillips should have gotten something on the header and even otherwise, there seemed to be no one marking the Man City man.
Jurgen Klopp was not one bit happy with the way the Reds defended last night and called it out in the interview
.“When you see the third goal… We changed before, not directly before, but it gave a bit of new organisation.
“Yes Nat [Phillips], we all expect him to win that and to get a bit of a header, but behind him was absolutely nobody apart from two City players. So again, the goals we conceded were completely unnecessary”
Joe Gomez, who was one of the best players on the pitch the last time Man City played Liverpool did not have a good game last night. It was a fairly familiar issue that has been plaguing the Reds this season.
