Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp makes transfer admission amidst pressure to sign players

Speaking to the media ahead of the game against Brentford (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has made it clear that the club cannot just splash the cash in the January transfer window.

The Reds have spent nearly £35m up front to sign PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo this month. The speculations are running high that the club needs to add a midfielder to their squad, with links to players such as Jude Bellingham, Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Sofyan Amrabat.

But, in response to those calls, Klopp has urged caution and has spread calmness around the possible buzz of more signings in the current transfer window.

Here’s what the boss said in the press conference ahead of the game against Brentford (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“Honestly, we cannot play like Monopoly. We never did and I don’t understand it. Of course we cannot just spend and never could. And we always sort our situations. It is a big part of my philosophy, really working full of faith and trust with the players we have and not constantly questioning them by telling them that we need another player in their position.

“But that somebody is surprised when I say we will not now start splashing the cash – is that the phrase? I never did it but I know it anyway! – that should be really clear. If there is something we can do, and that was always the case, and that means the right player and financial situation, we will do it. Then if not, then no.”

This quote has come as a change in tone from the boss, who a few days ago, was pretty bullish about the fact that while he is ready to work with the current players, there is always room to improve and spend money

What these sentences kind of tell us is that he may have gotten the briefing that unless something comes up, there won’t be any more additions in the January window. Local journalist Paul Joyce has echoed these sentiments in his report.

With what we have seen from the team this season, there is no denying that they need massive help in midfield. Even if someone does not follow football regularly, would suggest that this team is lacking legs, dynamism and quality in the middle of the park.

So, while spending money on Gakpo was good looking at the injury situations of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, it might be a negligent attitude from the club to not back Klopp with the money he wants to sign at least one midfielder this month.

There was a similar mistake made in the 2021 January transfer window, when defensive injuries decimated the functionality of the team. The manager did not get sufficient funds at the time to bring a quality defender in. Repeating the mistake will prove that little has been learned.
