“These players will go on”- Brighton provide update on key midfield duo amidst Liverpool interest

Brighton & Hove Albion keen on keeping hold of Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo amidst Liverpool links

Paul Barber, chief executive of Brighton & Hove Albion, is keen on keeping hold of Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo in January amidst links to Liverpool.

The Argentina international has impressed many with his exploits at the 2022 World Cup, including the Reds. On the other hand, the Ecuador star is also being associated with the Merseyside outfit.

Speaking to the media via The Argus (h/t Liverpool Echo), Barber is not expecting any changes to the West London side’s squad in the ongoing transfer window. However, he realises some of Brighton’s quality players will leave in the coming future.

“In an ideal world our squad, which is as good as it has been for a long time, will remain intact through the whole of January and we will go into the second half of the season as we are.

“We know there is going to be interest in Alexis. We know Moises Caicedo is one of the top talents. We can’t be surprised when there is interest and at some point we have to accept that these players will go on to play at an even higher level than ours.”

Mac Allister joined the Seagulls in the winter window of 2019 from Boca Juniors. Since then, the 24-year-old has developed into a fine player at the West London club. He played a key role for Lionel Scaloni’s team in Qatar as they lifted the golden trophy.

The Argentine is a versatile player capable of playing in various positions in the middle of the park. In the current campaign, the midfielder has scored five goals in the Premier League in 14 appearances.

On the other hand, Caicedo is a brilliant prospect as well. The 21-year-old signed for Brighton in January 2021. However, he broke into the Seagulls’ first team in the second half of last season.

Since then, the Ecuador international has been a regular under Graham Potter as well as Roberto De Zerbi. The former Independiente del Valle star mostly plays in the number six position.

Liverpool’s engine room evidently needs freshening up. Injuries have taken their toll on our season up until now, with the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita, amongst others, spending time on the sidelines.

Our midfield is also ageing, with key players in their 30s. Mac Allister and Caicedo are two quality talents. But it remains to be seen whether the club will be able to land either of them.
