Darren Bent says he ‘feels sorry’ for Liverpool star Darwin Nunez

There is no different story to Darwin Nunez‘s latest game for Liverpool. At the centre of so many chances, but failed to cash in. He had three shots against Brentford and was also guilty of missing one big chance against the Bees [stats via FotMob].

The 23-year-old has not really got going at the Reds but he has constantly caused mayhem in the backline of numerous teams and it is only his shot conversion rate which has taken a back seat. Nine goals and three assists in 22 appearances is not bad, but given his price tag, fans would naturally expect more of him.

He only scored for the Reds four games ago, but he has put to waste so many chances in this while that it feels like an eternity since the last time Darwin hit the back of the net for the Reds.

Speaking exclusively on talkSPORT about how Darwin has not been finding the back of the net, former Tottenham striker Darren Bent says he feels sorry for the Uruguayan and here is the rest of what he talked about:

“Do you know who I do feel sorry for for Liverpool? I don’t know if it’s striker’s union, but Darwin Nunez. This guy will do everything right until he gets to the last bit. He scored one good goal, which he was offside [against Brentford], but it’s a good finish.”

But he just gets opportunities and he’s almost seems to get caught in-between. He goes round the goalkeeper and manages to hit the only place where here’s a defender on the line.For someone whose movement is that good, who is that quick, it will turn for him.”

Darwin under immense pressure to perform

Bent has got it precisely to the T when he said that Darwin’s movement is good. To constantly find yourself in the middle of so much space and time, Nunez must be doing something right and that is something not many people will talk about as it is not as funny as watching him miss a goal.

With the combination of his speed and physicality, he can do much better than what has been on show until now, and Darwin himself would know that. He would be working his backside off in training to rectify his finishing, and hopefully, it shows product on the field as well.

Liverpool play Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup next on 7th January, and against a struggling defence, Darwin would hope to get a goal or two. Apart from his finishing, his game is absolutely fantastic to watch, and one would say that he could work on his dribbling as well, which would make for a deadly combo with his immense pace.

But having said that, as a striker, Nunez’s primary job is to score goals and help his team win matches. If he is not able to finish his chances and convert opportunities into goals, it can be problematic for the Reds because it means they are not taking full advantage of the scoring opportunities that they create.

It is good that he is not very proficient in speaking English which helps him keep his head away from all the criticism he has been facing. He can only keep his head up and perform week in and week out and hopefully deliver the goals sooner than later.
