Injury Update: Blow for Liverpool as defensive colossus’s injury worse than thought

Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk set for an extended spell on the sidelines

From a situation wherein Liverpool would have felt things cannot get worse, Virgil van Dijk‘s hamstring injury has dealt a huge blow to Liverpool. As per The Times, the 31-year-old Dutchman did not believe it to be a serious issue, but gaffer Jurgen Klopp did not want to take any risks and took him off at half-time against Brentford.

With the Reds’ season already going downhill, not having Virgil in the backline is a problematic situation for Liverpool even with the fact that the former Southampton man is not in the best of forms and has not been at his usual self this season.

Ever since his ACL injury in the 2020 season, the sad truth is VVD has been a shadow of his former self and Joel Matip, more often than not has been much more secure at the back than the Dutchman and the only person responsible for this is Jordan Pickford.

Injury-worry for the Reds all over again

This could prove to be a huge butterfly effect as Virgil’s injury situation could mean that the Reds again dip into the transfer market like the 2020 season to find a short-term fix for their situation. Back then, we signed Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke 04.

Liverpool have three games in the upcoming few weeks. Starting with Wolves at home in the FA Cup, followed by a visit to Sussex to play Brighton in the league after which Graham Potter’s Chelsea travel to the North-West to play the Reds at Anfield.

Klopp would now turn his head towards Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Nat Phillips and decide who could fit best to fill in the void. According to the BBC, Virg will see a hamstring specialist soon to determine how long he will be out of action.

Ibou would hope to get over the dreadful game he had against Brentford and would hope to retain his spot in the starting XI. That performance is most likely a one-off as Konate has been brilliant for the Reds ever since signing for us last season.

Hopefully, VVD is back from his injury soon, and more than that, he is back to his best sooner than later as at his prime, he was next to unplayable for the Reds and it is not a great sight for the Reds to see him perform like this.
