Liverpool monitoring 24-year-old Dutch midfielder impressing in Serie A

Transfer News: Liverpool monitor Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners

After successfully signing Cody Gakpo after his successful World Cup campaign with The Netherlands, Liverpool are eyeing one of his national team-mates, Teun Koopmeiners.

iNews via Liverpool Echo reports that the Reds are monitoring the player’s situation and have put him under ‘watch’. The 24-year-old is a regular for Atalanta and has impressed for them over the years.

With Pep Ljinders given a greater role in terms of team management and say in recruitment. We could possibly see an influx of Dutch players at the club, very similar to the Portuguese overload at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Speaking of Koopmeiners, he joined Atalanta only in 2021 from the Dutch side Alkmaar. In 58 appearances for La Dea across all competitions, Koopmeiners has eight goals and five assists and could be classified as a goal-scoring midfielder, which the Reds have lacked ever since Phillipe Coutinho moved to Barcelona in 2018.

Koopmeiners to Liverpool

Prior to his move to Atalanta, it was actually Liverpool who had the initial interest in the Koopmeiners and Liverpool Echo can confirm the same. It is now common knowledge that signing only one midfielder in four years is coming to hurt the Reds in all ways possible.

In all likelihood, Koopmeiners should have been a Red by now, but nevertheless, this time, the Reds actually need a midfielder as the lack of depth in that department needs no reintroduction. The current lot of Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho have a combined goal contribution of one this season.

Moreover, the age factor also comes into consideration as the players in the midfield are either too old or too young to play and that has put the team in a transitional phase.

That is precisely why we need young midfielders like Koopmeiners who can steady the ship and also take control of the pivot in the long term. Pushing the likes of Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho into the first team even when they are unable to take as much control of the game as Liverpool desire at this developing stage in their respective careers could not be the best thing the gaffer could do for young players.

Moreover, as a young player at only 24 years old, Koopmeiners has a lot of potential to continue growing and improving as a footballer. Hopefully, the Reds in case they want to get him on board, do so in the January window itself, as the immediate future for the club is not looking good.
