Transfer News: Chelsea to battle Liverpool for 21-year-old French midfielder

Chelsea enter the race for Liverpool transfer target Manu Kone

As per football.london, Chelsea have entered the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach’s 21-year-old French midfielder Manu Kone who is also garnering interest from Liverpool. The Reds’ interest in the player was confirmed by Fabrizio Romano via his Twitter account recently.

Chelsea’s involvement now sees them alongside the Reds, Bayern Munich, Newcastle United and PSG in the race to get their man on board from Monchengladbach. His contract at Die Fohlen stands set to expire in the summer of 2025 (Transfermarkt) and teams will have to pay up accordingly to secure his services.

In 44 appearances for Daniel Farke’s side across all competitions, Kone has four goals and two assists to his name. The Frenchman has a tendency to walk himself into the referee’s book as he could get too aggressive with his work rate at times, and more often than not, ends up with a yellow card as he has 15 in those 44 games already.

Blues in the race for Kone

Chelsea dipping into the transfer market for the player is not shocking at all. Both Liverpool and the Blues find themselves in similar situations when it comes to the midfield with a transitioning side needing more than just a cosmetic rebuild.

Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Thiago Alcantara are all over the age of 31, and the club needs long-term replacements to future-proof themselves. Harvey Elliott, Fabio Carvalho and Curtis Jones are nowhere near being the finished product, and we need top-class talent to help the Merseysiders sail through this transitional phase.

That is why we see ourselves linked with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Enzo Fernandez who are proven players at the highest possible levels. Both are more than capable of delivering in Liverpool’s midfield. Kone might not be at their level yet but would be a handy addition at Anfield.

Liverpool is in desperate need of a new midfielder who can join the club in January and quickly adapt to the team’s style of play. Whether it be Kone or someone else, FSG needs to address the shortcoming quickly.
