“A joy to watch”- Klopp impressed with Liverpool new boy following January switch

Jurgen Klopp talks about Liverpool new boy Cody Gakpo

Cody Gakpo is finally a registered Liverpool player after much speculation about when the player could make his debut for the Reds after the announcement of signing him came through.

Following long-term injuries to both Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota who play on the left wing, the Reds were forced to play Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out of position. However, Gakpo’s arrival means he can slot into the role with ease.

Donning the #18 jersey, Gakpo follows the legacy of fellow Dutchman Dirk Kuyt who was extremely successful for the Reds playing on the right wing. Jurgen Klopp spoke about Gakpo in his pre-match conference ahead of the match against Wolves in the FA Cup and here is what he said via James Pearce on The Athletic’s Twitter account

.

The manager only has nice things to say about the new recruit and hopefully, he can adjust to the requirements of the league in a similar way to Luis Diaz. Lucho’s quick adaptation to the league was so nice to see until his unfortunate injury now.

Gakpo could play against Wolverhampton

Klopp saying Gakpo knows where the goal stands is a tad bit funny given how the current lot of forwards, especially Darwin Nunez, have tended to miss a few chances which seem “easy” to a viewer. If all goes well and Cody continues his World Cup form, the percentage of shot conversions will go up as well.

Gakpo is in contention to start the game against Wolves in the FA Cup at LW, and if he does, he could replace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who was the Reds’ sole goalscorer in the 3-1 loss to Brentford away on 2nd January. The Ox is not a natural winger and could return to his natural role of a midfielder.

In a team that has certainly struggled to consistently find the back of the net in recent games, Gakpo’s presence could be exactly what Liverpool needs to get their shot conversion rates back up to where they need to be.
