“A very special competition”- Jurgen Klopp is ready to make more memories with Liverpool in the FA Cup

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp opens up on the FA Cup ahead of the fixture against Wolves

Liverpool begin their FA Cup campaign this season in a fixture against Julen Lopetegui’s Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield later tonight. This cup game comes at a time when the Reds are not in the best of forms in the league, and a much-needed change such as this knockout game might be something Jurgen Klopp‘s side would welcome.

The Merseysiders, as defending champions, will face immense pressure to defend their title. Kostas Tsimikas’ penalty against Chelsea less than a year ago helped Liverpool win their eighth FA Cup title. The manager would know the importance of winning each game from this point to generate enough momentum to sustain the Reds’ place as the “big boys” of the league. Currently, the form is questionable and visibly, we are headed into a transition phase.

Speaking to the club’s official website ahead of the clash against Wolves, the gaffer talked about the speciality of the tournament, and also spoke about how important it is to win games in the FA Cup.

Here is what Klopp said via the club’s official website:

“This will be the first time we have played in the FA Cup since winning the competition at Wembley last May. The memories we have of that day will live with us forever but now we would like to create new ones.”

“As everyone in football knows, the FA Cup is a very special competition and like everyone else involved, we would like to go as far in it as possible so let’s give it a try.”

The importance of the FA Cup for Klopp

FA Cup is a special competition because it represents the rich history and tradition of English football. Also, it provides an opportunity for teams of all levels to compete for the coveted trophy. Moreover, as the oldest cup competition in the world, it has its own essence as well.

The Reds’ have won the competition just eight times, a rather unflattering number given our rich history. Hopefully that will soon turn into nine, maybe even as early as this season.

January signing Cody Gakpo could in all likelihood make his much-awaited debut in the game and hopefully help the Reds progress to the next round. Hopefully, we start winning games on a consistent basis and keep at it for the remainder of the season.

The league games against Leicester City and Brentford were big wake-up calls and hopefully, the Reds have learnt from those average performances. We will soon know if that is the case.
