“Wears his heart on his sleeve”- Under-fire Liverpool ace backed to become the club’s go-to man

Glen Johnson has backed Darwin Nunez to be the main man next season

Speaking to BetFred (h/t Liverpool Echo), former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has backed striker Darwin Nunez to be the main man in the team next season and praised his performances this season.

The Uruguay international, who arrived from Benfica in the preceding summer window, has had some harsh criticism come his way. He was always bound to take time to settle down in the new league with a World Cup to play in between.

Granted that the 23-year-old has missed a few chances so far, he has always been a threat in behind for Liverpool. If we have to quantify his importance in the team, just look at how bad the team was upfront without him against Brighton and Hove Albion. Everyone was bad in that game, but they had no outlet like Nunez who has the pace and physical strength to shrug off defenders.

Here’s what Johnson said when asked about the Uruguayan’s performances this season and what to expect from him going forward (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“He’s a fantastic player that wears his heart on his sleeve and in another season’s time, I believe he will be Liverpool’s main man. He has a lot to offer. He’s quick, aggressive and once he fully adapts to the Premier League then he definitely has the chance to be successful.”

In 23 appearances in all competitions this season, Nunez has 10 goals and three assists. Those numbers are of a player who is young and settling into a new league and team while getting peppered by people and media on a consistent basis.

A few days ago, Premier League legend Alan Shearer wrote a piece on The Athletic pointing to how good the player is and how will become an excellent striker for Liverpool going forward.

We all know Shearer knows a thing or two about strikers. When he says Nunez is good, people should listen and stop doubting him.

The 23-year-old is currently touch-and-go for the upcoming Wolverhampton Wanderers game tonight. As pointed out by Johnson, he is not far from being Liverpool’s main man.
