“Together, everybody”- Jurgen Klopp outlines defensive commitment as Liverpool attempt to turn their season around

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on what he wants from his team for the remainder of this season

Speaking to the media ahead of the Chelsea game (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has outlined a few things he wants from his team going into the second half of this season.

The game against Chelsea is the 19th league encounter the Reds will play. So, they will reach the halfway point of this campaign and the challenges are greater than ever.

Despite an underwhelming display so far, Liverpool have a chance (even if slim) to finish in the top four and are alive in the FA Cup and the Champions League. A good four months and we could see them making something out of a dire-looking season.

For that to happen, here’s what Klopp expects his team to show (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“We need consistency in a good way. We have to defend at a high level which we haven’t done often enough, and based on that we can create chances.

“Wolves game a good example. A lot of things we did are things we have to do – we have to defend together, everybody. It’s intense and will never be different. We have to show we are ready for that all the time. It was a really nice night”

Klopp is clear about what he wants. He has always talked about his team having to defend as a unit if they are to stand a chance in games. So far this season, they have not done that very often. Hence, languishing in ninth on the table.

There are a few obvious reasons behind this defensive inability though, starting from injuries to players at a consistent rate. Initially, it was midfielders falling down and now we have forwards out for long periods of time.

Despite all of that, it is still a decent squad that can challenge to finish in the top four. Although the Wolves game showed signs of improvement, consistency needs to creep in to get results and points on the board.

Let’s hope that the Chelsea game is just that. Sometimes a chance of playing a big team raises the stakes and performance levels of the players. If we win on Saturday, there is a real chance that it could become the launch-pad for a promising second half of the season.
