“We have to do it as well”- Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp sheds light on rival side’s lavish transfer outlay

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp shares his thoughts on the relentless spending by Chelsea

Speaking to the media ahead of the Chelsea game (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp shared his thoughts on the relentless spending by the west London side since the takeover in the summer.

Figuratively speaking, Chelsea have forked out close to £460m in the last two transfer windows and there are 11 days remaining in January. Todd Boehly and his team have almost played football manager when it comes to signing players.

On the contrary, since the start of the 2022 summer window till date, Liverpool have spent close to £120m (most of it to buy Darwin Nunez) (Transfermarkt

). It’s not that Chelsea didn’t spend enough under the previous regime too, but this has been next level.

Here’s what Klopp said on this subject and what the future looks like (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“Interesting [Chelsea spending]. I can’t explain it, I have no idea. But if the numbers are true then it’s impressive.

“I can’t see investment stopping in the future, so that means we have to do it as well. I believe in coaching, developing and team building 100%. But meanwhile the managers out there, they are all good and they believe in that as well. So if they start spending then if we don’t spend you will have a problem. I am not sure Chelsea can do that for the next 10 years though.”

Well, if Chelsea misses out on Champions League football next season, the investment done this year could turn out to be problematic. At times, players want to leave when the club is not playing at the highest level of European competition. It disrupts the squad-building process of the manager.

It was interesting to hear Klopp admit that Liverpool have to spend too in order to keep up with the financial giants like Chelsea, Manchester City and others in Europe. We know how good a manager he is, but that can be trumped with incessant spending and constant improvement from others.

Let’s hope he is backed sufficiently in the summer window if nothing is to come by in January. Till then, as he said in the previous press conference, the team has to fight through the moments and produce results.
