As quoted by Mail Plus, Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara admitted that the quadruple bid last season has scarred the team this season.
The Reds are yet to win a league game in 2023, and their performance at home against Chelsea showed how far they have fallen compared to last season when they were whiskers away from becoming the greatest English club team ever.
Losing the league by one point and only losing the Champions League in the final to Real Madrid would have had its own hangover.
Speaking to the media after the Chelsea game, Thiago has admitted that and talked about what needs to happen going forward (h/t Mail Plus):
“It is not just about physical stuff. It is something psychological because we were so close to winning everything and we just touched it but sadly it went away. We are looking forward to the next game against Brighton (in the FA Cup) now and that’s all.
“I think the bad moments we have to be together as a team. Last season we had one of the greatest seasons I’ve ever had in my life. This season is not one of the best but it doesn’t matter. It is a challenge. We have great quality and great guys to sort it out and I’m sure we will do that.”
With a shortened pre-season due to the World Cup in the November-December period, the team did not have enough time to recover from last season’s heartache and go again this year.
That, compounded with the fact that the owners did not seem bothered to back Jurgen Klopp with the necessary funds to buy a midfielder or two, especially when it felt like the team was short in that department.
If this season is anything to go by as proof, it showed how big a mistake that was to not strengthened when the chips are up. At the moment, all the chips are down and the possibility of playing Champions League football next season looks distant.
Despite all that, there are 19 league games to go and we are still alive in the FA Cup and this season’s Champions League. On the basis of the performance against Chelsea, this team is not capable of being consistent. So, it maybe is time for Klopp to focus more on the remaining cup competitions and keep the league games as a second priority.
