Pundits claims Chelsea are better-placed than Liverpool to finish in the top four

Speaking on Match of the Day, as quoted by Liverpool Echo, former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder and pundit Jermaine Jenas feels Chelsea have more in them to finish in the top four than Liverpool.

After an underwhelming game between both teams on Saturday, they are tied on 29 points, 10 behind fourth and third-placed Manchester United and Newcastle United. But, on the evidence of what we saw at Anfield, Chelsea did look better than Liverpool.

The Reds are yet to win a league game in 2023 and to be honest, haven’t looked like winning any of the three league games they have played this calendar year so far.

Here’s what Jenas said when asked which of the two teams has a better chance to finish in the Champions League spots (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“If I had to gamble on one, I would say Chelsea – with the number of signings they’ve made. Liverpool just don’t seem able to get themselves going. There were definitely some positives today for Liverpool, but I will go for Chelsea.”

We cannot really argue with those points. Chelsea have made the moves in this window to back their manager and have a squad capable of being consistent in the second half of this season.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are a club that is in the doldrums at the moment and no one seems to know where the solutions to the problems are. Even manager Jurgen Klopp

It is such a shame to see a team that was close to immortality last season hasn’t got enough support in the way of signings in the last two transfer windows. There is still time to change with a week to go in the January window, but it looks unlikely.

The Chelsea game showed us where we are as a team. The quality and intensity are lacking by a mile, while the squad cries out for a midfield addition or two soon. Saving the funds for summer (even that is not guaranteed with the current owners) makes no sense if we are playing Conference League football next season.
