Chelsea could table a second bid for Liverpool target Enzo Fernandez
According to the Guardian (h/t Liverpool Echo), Chelsea are ready to table a second bid for SL Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who has also been linked with Liverpool.
Liverpool were initially linked with Fernandez before his impressive performances at the FIFA World Cup which brought the attention of other top clubs. He played in all seven of their games in Qatar as Argentina beat France in the final.
One of the clubs interested was Chelsea, who were willing to pay higher than the player’s release clause to secure his signing.
It seemed like the move is going to happen for the player but in the end, Chelsea tabled a different bid which angered Benfica’s hierarchy and the player ended up staying with the Portuguese outfit.
It felt that Chelsea’s inability to do business with Benfica for Fernandez would open the door for other clubs, such as Liverpool to make a move for the player, most notably in the summer transfer window.
Now it seems Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is not done with his extravagance in the January transfer window and is ready to table a second bid for the Argentine midfielder.
With less than ten days to go until the window closes, it looks tough that Benfica will sanction any sale with so little time to find a replacement. But if they do, it would certainly make Chelsea a very strong team on paper.
Moreover, it will come at the expense of Liverpool strengthening itself. If we don’t sign Jude Bellingham in the summer and miss out on Fernandez as well, serious questions will have to be asked of the management.
On the other hand, Boehly could indeed pay the player’s release clause and bring him to Stamford Bridge with personal terms already agreed between the player and club.

Hopefully, the above situation does not materialise and Fennadez ends up staying at Benfica for at least till the end of the season so that we would have an opportunity to make a move for the player.
