Dortmund boss breaks silence on the future of Liverpool target Jude Bellingham
As quoted by Goal (h/t Liverpool Echo), Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic has opened up about the future of the star midfielder and Liverpool target Jude Bellingham.
Bellingham has been linked with a host of top clubs, including Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea. Recent updates from Sky Sports do suggest that the Reds are leading the race to sign the England international.
But, nothing can be guaranteed as of yet. The transfer race amongst the clubs to sign the 19-year-old could well be the most gruelling in the coming summer. It remains to be seen whether the player would choose more money or follow the footsteps of his idol Steven Gerrard and don a Liverpool jersey.
Here’s what Terzic said regarding the midfielder’s future amidst heavy speculation (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“I don’t think there’s a player that’s been more speculated about in our squad right now than Jude has been in the last few weeks and months.
“Because he’s an outstanding talent; because he is, I think, past that talent status, even though he’s only 19.
“He is an extremely important player for us, who has now scored the first goal in a game for us again, who was extremely important in both attack and defence on Sunday.
“We are sure that Jude will play a leading role again in the game in Leverkusen on Sunday.”
There is nothing in that quote that suggests Dortmund are confident of keeping Bellingham beyond this summer. A few days ago, Daily Star reported that the player is set to reject a new contract offer from the German side.
If we look at the history of Liverpool’s transfer dealings in the recent past, they generally sign players with whom the rumours don’t run for months and months. How they signed the likes of Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, Fabinho and Luis Diaz are examples of that. They did have the Thiago Alcantara links running for too long before a deal was completed.
It seems that irrespective of whether the Reds sign Bellingham or not, the speculations won’t stop. The 19-year-old can be perceived as the next Gerrard and it would be a massive shame if we miss out on him, especially for financial reasons because the spending has been minimal from the owners for some time now.
