Calvin Ramsay on how he did not feel the injury that hampered his first season at Liverpool
As quoted by Liverpool Echo, Liverpool defender Calvin Ramsay opens up about his injury struggles that have hampered his first season at Anfield following the summer arrival from Scottish club Aberdeen.
Ramsay had a stress fracture injury that kept him out for most of the first half of the campaign. He was diagnosed with that injury during the medical procedure to complete his transfer from Aberdeen to Liverpool.
As a result of that, the management has been careful with the youngster and his game time. He has made only two appearances for the Reds senior team so far.
Talking about that injury and how he did not feel anything despite the X-ray revealing the truth, here’s Ramsay (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“I was gutted, to be honest. I was in a scanner for about two hours and got told I had two stress fractures and had to go back in. I didn’t even know it was there and I couldn’t feel it. When they told me I thought: ‘That can’t be right’.
“I went back into the scanner and it showed the two stress fractures again. It made it even worse that I couldn’t feel it because it felt like I was fine and could go out and train and play.
“I wanted to come here and just kick on, start training and hopefully play games, so it was a setback. I worked hard in the gym a lot so I could start training again as soon as possible. Now that I’m back and feeling good I need to keep working hard to try to get into the team. It won’t be easy, but it’s never going to be easy at a massive club like this.”
It must be such a hard thing to accept for a young player just after making his move to one of the biggest clubs in the world. He is only 19 though and has enough time to make a complete recovery and start developing as a player here.
By the nature of the transfer, it felt like Liverpool are looking to add depth to their right-back department. Trent Alexander-Arnold has played a lot of football in the last four years and won every trophy possible. He has looked a bit jaded in the last few months.
So, the idea behind signing Ramsay would have been to slowly integrate him into the team and add competition for a place at right-back. As it turned out, the Scotland international is yet to make that breakthrough appearance where everyone takes note of him. We hope that is not far away.

Till then, the evergreen James Milner is doing his bit of helping Alexander-Arnold in the right-back department. But the former can’t keep going on forever at the top while Joe Gomez, a makeshift right-back, is needed more often than not to add depth in the centre-back department.
Opportunities will come for Ramsay, he just has to be patient and keep fit.
